What’s in My Work Bag

+ + January 26, 2017

You may have figured it out by now, but my new job involves commuting. This means spending a lot of time on trains and hauling quite a bit of stuff between Brighton and London. I’ve worked out a schedule so I don’t bring my laptop home with me every day, and I now try to make lunch at work, but still, several times a week I load up my Big Bag with all the essentials.

The bag is a Lululemon number that I picked up– or rather my parents bought for me as a gift– when I was in Canada over Christmas. Its official name is the Go Getter Bag (it’s not available in the UK, but the All Day Duffel is similar), and when I saw it I knew it would be a great bag for a daily trek across Southern England.

The bag itself is very roomy. It’s designed to fit a 15-inch laptop and has a padded sleeve, so the transport of this expensive device can go smoothly. It just has two straps to wear it over the shoulder, but the straps are made of leather so they’re sturdy but comfy, and there’s a little thing to hook the two together so you don’t need to worry as much about one handle slipping and bringing everything else with it.

It also has a truly alarming amount of pockets. On the outside, there is a subtle pocket on the back, perfect for slipping my phone on the go. There are two water bottle pockets also on the outside, so I no longer need to worry about my water bottle leaking and destroying all of my belongings. There are also two random pockets that are practically invisible. I imagine this is where I will store precious stones or drugs when the time comes. And it has a strap which can be fastened to make it easier to carry my yoga mat. You know, if I owned a yoga mat and felt like taking it to work.

Inside is the aforementioned laptop sleeve which keeps my work laptop nice and snug. For home life, I have a 13 inch MacBook Air, but for work, I tote around a 15 inch MacBook Pro. When looking for a bag it was a lot trickier to find something that fit a 15 inch than a 13, so keep that in mind if you’re shopping around.

Inside the bag, there are a casual 4 pockets, 2 of which zip up. In one of the pockets there is a small bag which can be used to store smelly gym gear (again, if I had any) and it also came with a protective sleeve for my hair straightener which is at home because I don’t bring that to work (…yet. We will see how much of my life shifts to work because I’m too lazy in the morning in due course).

Now you might think with all of those pockets I’d keep everything nice and organised, but you would be wrong because you don’t realize that I am a horrible person. So instead of keeping my keys in one of the easy-to-access pockets, they’re actually in the bottom of my bag.

Along with them are this agenda from the Rifle Paper Company, which I really need to get better at using. And this notebook which holds all my tips and tricks and goals for this blog and my social media. And another planner which is supposed to be for planning blog content but which I also never use.

There are also headphones which commute with me since I use them both on the train and at work. There are hair elastics because I use them and then forget them around the flat at home (which drives Katy crazy). I found this copy of The Bell Jar in one of the pockets and I had completely forgotten it was there because I’m bad at sticking to my goal of reading on the train. And there’s a Lancome Juicy Shaker in Piece of Cake which I actually really like. Remember when all the big bloggers got sent these and raved about them for a few seconds and then we never heard of them again? I like them. They’re a good work-bag makeup item because they keep my lips feeling nice, and give a bit of colour when I’m feeling a bit bleh around 3 pm.

Finally, I have my phone which is a rose gold Sony Xperia X and trust me when I say this phone is going in the bin as soon as I can afford a new one. And there’s my wallet which is a very lovely rose gold Kate Spade. This wallet is never going in the bin, because it’s pretty and functional, unlike my piece of shit phone. Never should have left iPhone behind.

And that’s it! Nothing else to see here! What? What’s that you say? Where are the tampons and copious amounts of garbage? Well, if you must know, I am a menstrual cup user and I highly recommend it. And yes, there is garbage in my bag, but it’s not aesthetically pleasing and this is a blog of hashtag goals aesthetics!

I was enjoying the post but this part made me laugh out loud. “Finally, I have my phone which is a rose gold Sony Xperia X and trust me when I say this phone is going in the bin as soon as I can afford a new one. • This is a lovely bag! Great for travel/commuting. I’m a very organised person, even my handbag is organised, so this feels a bit scary to me because it’s not that organised. Haha. But I get it, it’s easier sometimes to just chuck everything in, especially when you’re in a rush to leave or go to work! x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

You don’t carry as much as I would expect from a bag this size! Even though you say there’s garbage inside your bag, you keep it pretty organized! xxx
